The Spiritual Journey of Humanity
Join Great Books and God at 6:30pm on Tuesday, September 16th when we meet to discuss our sixth book, The Everlasting Man by G. K. Chesterton (Empire Books, ISBN9781619491441).
The Everlasting Man is a Christian apologetics book written by G. K. Chesterton. Published in 1925, it is to some extent a deliberate rebuttal of H. G. Wells’ The Outline of History, disputing Wells’ portrayals of human life and civilization as a seamless development from animal life and of Jesus Christ as merely another charismatic figure.
In The Everlasting Man Chesterton tries to illustrate the spiritual journey of humanity, or at least of Western civilization, and in doing so tries to answer these questions: Is man merely the accidental product of evolution? Or does Christianity provide deeper insight into the true nature and purpose of humankind?
Great Books and God is an “open enrollment” book club. Members choose the books we read and can join at any time. If you have questions, contact Dean at deanvaeth@comcast.net or just drop in on Tuesday, September 16th in the Parish Center at 6:30pm for discussion and light snacks. Bring the book. Bring a friend.
